GORDEEVA AND GRINKOV SHOWED OFF THEIR TECHNICAL BRILLIANCE
by Daniel Delius translated by Stefanie Ludwig
Dominance of Soviet pairs skaters survives
Gold is able to give beautiful faces extra brilliance. Ekaterina Gordeeva, 16 years young, in her third year at the international business, showed a cheerful, relaxed mood. Exuberance of a child. She continued the Soviet dominance in pairs skating together with Sergei Grinkov, her partner who is five years older, in front of 19 000 spectators in the Saddledome, they dominated the competition thanks to technical perfection and adequate expression.

Thus, the judges weren't able to force themselves to give Gordeeva and Grinkov a 6.0. They gave fourteen 5.9s to the Muscovites. "We had a good day", summarized Ekaterina, who was rather self-critical after the European Championships, upset. And they also don't believe that they reached their limit. "We still have jumps up our sleeve which we will not show until next season", said their coach Stanislav Leonovich.
Tamara Moskvina is rather doubtful about this: "Ekaterina will become bigger and stronger. They will not dominate pairs skating for years, will not mark an era."
