KATYA GORDEEVA: "I DREAM TO BECOME A FOREST RANGER"
translated by Maureen Diffley
The cover has a profile photo of Katya, without make-up in a black turtleneck. She's written a note "Congratulations to all the readers of Student Meridian with terrific spring holidays. E.gordeeva" There's a photo of her in a simple blue jogging suit standing, and leaning over and tying her skates up on grass outside the rink. You can't really tell that they are skates, though.
From the metro stop "Rechnoi vokzal" to Novogorsk is about half an hour. Here is where elite members of different national teams gather to train. One autumn day we went to the sports base. Our goal - to meet with K.G. and her partner, S. Grinkov who won by a huge majority our poll naming the "most charming athlete of the Winter Games at Calgary".
Katya stood before the entrance to the rink. Our little devoted one (the author) went up and asked, "Are you (fam. form) Katya Gordeeva?" "yes" with a surprised look.
"I'm from Student Meridian and want to congratulate you - you are the most charming/fascinating."
"Are you serious?" her grey-blue eyes twinkling with many meanings.
"Yes, I can show you letters from fans of your talent"
"Just not now - there's little time. Let's meet after practice. Can you wait about an hour?"
The live K.G. was not too much like the one we're used to seeing on TV. Close-up she was tiny and skinny - like a pubescent. For a while I couldn't figure out what was missing. Later I suddenly remembered - her smile - the one so many compare with Gagarin's. (trans. Yuri Gagarin - 1st astronaut) In exactly one hour we met in the hall. Their coach said, if there are questions, contact me and left for his affairs. So we were left in a threesome. Katya sat in an armchair and Sergei stood looking down on us. Then he said, "Really there's no need for me to be here. Surely "the most - the most" you didn't name me, but Katya. Maybe I should go?" Katya underhandedly showed a bag. (trans. hasn't got a clue.) First I asked if she had real friends, girlfriends. For some time she thought, then sincerely and adultishly breathed hard:
"No. I don't have real girlfriends with whom I can talk, share my joy and grief. It's not because I'm proud or antisocial, I just don't have time to be with friends."
Question: When did you start skating?
Answer: Mama took me when I was 4. But I don't remember that time well. But from 6-7 years, I already enjoyed skating."
Question: You're not tired of it yet?
Answer: Of course, after a season like last year's - there's some fatigue. But then you rest a bit and want to go back on the ice.
Question: What kind of people do you like best?
Answer: Fat or skinny? (with a happy expression)
Question: I mean what characteristics..
Answer: Honest, joyful, interesting (scrunching her brow)
Question: Do you think you're interesting?
Answer: No
Seryozha still standing nearby "Today she is very self- critical"
"Ok, they're not asking you." (turning to him)
Question: Do you have problems?
Answer: Who doesn't?
Question: How do you get out of different situations?
Answer: In different ways.
Question: What parent understands you better?
Answer: I have equally good relationships with both my parents.
Question: Do you have a brother or sister?
Answer: A sister. She's in grade 7.
While we're talking a tall man comes up and says "need to see the program again. It needs a more creative entrance. Every day that goes by without inspiration you can call a wasted day". On Katya's face, there is no reaction. The man leaves. The conversation continues.
Question: Do you love to dance?
Answer: Sometimes, if I'm in the mood.
Question: Where do you have discos?
Answer: Here, where we're sitting (gesturing with her arm)
Question: Do you often use cosmetics?
Answer: Only when skating
Question: Last year you finished school and started institute. How is it going?
Answer: Generally, ok. I passed biology, composition and swimming exams. If everything will be good, in time I'll become a gym teacher.
Question: Who did you want to be in childhood?
Answer: A forest ranger. I love the forest. It's quiet and calm.
Question: Then why didn't you go to an institute of higher education of rural studies?
Answer: It's probably harder to study there. Maybe when I'm 40, I'll change professions.
Question: How do you see that?
Answer: Right now, I don't.
Background: When she was 13 and he 17, they took part in their first senior competition - USSR championships. The first pancake isn't easy to make - the young debutantes finished 6th. Specialists and viewers were won over by their boldness and charm. The difficult elements were performed easily and freely.
At Moscow News competition, Katya's fall caused them to fall from 2nd to 4th. Then in 86 nationals, they were 2nd at nationals for real. In one more month, triumph. Victory at worlds...
Question: You travel abroad often. In what countries have you been?
Answer: Honestly I don't remember them all.
Question: Do these trips affect you psychologically?
Answer: Yes, of course. I often feel like I'm "not in my dish". Seryozha I think doesn't seem to pay attention to this.
Question: Do you feel the difference in your ages?
Answer: Sometimes some ways.
Question: Is it hard to be a famous athlete?
Answer: Sometimes you get tired of it. But overall, it's pleasant.
Question: Do you think everything is right with you, regarding humor?
Answer: I can laugh at a jolly joke, but I'm not one to be a teller of jokes or the life of the party.
Question: Do you have an introverted or extroverted character?
Answer: It all depends on my mood.
During the photo shoot (months later), one of us suggested that she walk in the park in skates. "What stupidity. Why walk on grass in skates?" Leonovich put his hand on her shoulder and said, "Be nice. Don't be obstinate. Maybe it will result in a great shot." - "ok". Katya has put on her skates and it starts to pour rain.
Leonovich comes up and says, "It's time for you to run cross-country"
"Already - how? But I want to eat."
"I'll wait for you downstairs" Sergei said and left.
Katya waved and ran to the cafeteria. The next day they flew to Paris.
