January 1994
RUSSIAN NATIONALS INTERVIEW 1994
transcripted by Amy Lala and Olya Smolyanova
This is after the competition. Ekaterina and Sergei are dressed in street clothes. Katia is sitting on Sergei's lap. The interview looks like it's taking place in the kiss and cry. Zueva and Zakharov are sitting nearby.
Reporter: Katia, Seryozha, I'd like to congratulate you on your gold medal and the return to the Olympic family. We missed you and were looking forward to this. Marina, a question to you as a coach - did everything work out with this skate?
Marina: You know, there was a little break in the last part of the program but... almost the entire program... it was inspired, light and I am happy with their performance, happy with how they are skating now, happy with their form.
Reporter: I've noticed that Sergei wasn't too happy and even didn't want to come to this interview. Tell me, guys, the switch from professionals to amateurs - what did you have to do? Seryozha, please.
Sergei: We had to remember how to train, how to treat our training sessions, and we succeeded. We are now in a more or less good form and will try to improve it.
Reporter: I think classical music has always suited you. Is it something you are always attracted to or is it just a moment in time?
Ekaterina: I think it's because our choreographer, Marina Zueva, who has been working with us since we were paired up... she has taught us to love classical music and made it our style. Still, I don't think we look bad skating to other music and other styles, but classics is classics.
Reporter: How difficult was the process of returning to amateur skating, from your standpoint.
Ekaterina: The process was going, and is still going on. I think... of course... the stress of the amateur competition... two training sessions per day... it's difficult. But we wanted it and we are enjoying it.
Reporter: We all know you as hard workers and athletes very demanding to yourselves. Sergei, what else do you need to do in order to skate this program brilliantly?
Sergei: I don't know... I think the time we have left we will spend working on our skating so that the program can be one whole, so that we won't run out of steam or something. We need to hold the program so that everything looks as one whole.
Reporter: How's the daughter?
Ekaterina: The daughter is fine, maybe she's seeing me now.. (waves her hand).
Reporter: How old is she?
Ekaterina: She is a year and three months old.
