From a Russian newspaper:
EKATERINA AND SERGEI GRINKOV
translated by Olya Smolyanova
A big man and a miniature girl take their pose in the middle of the ice. Being used to such couples, we are biased: will this new pair become a mere imitation of Cherkasova and Shakhraj, or Pestova and Leonovich?
You can always recognize a Master's touch. One doesn't have to be a figure skating expert to distinguish the new students of CSKA largely for the incredibly difficult elements in their arsenal. Even compared to other Army pairs, Gordeeva and Grinkov's programs are packed with elements of top complexity, elements "ultra"C."
I remember back a few years, when I visited the Army skating rink one evening. I was standing by the boards, watching the smooth skating of Anna Kondrashova, the dynamic jumps of Alexander Fadeev.
"Do you see that girl over there?" asked Stanislav Zhuk nodding to the side of the rink.
"The one that keeps falling?"
At that precise moment, Katia found herself back on the ice, winced a little bit from the pain, brushed the ice powder off her skate, and, as if nothing had happened, got back on her feet and skated back to Sergei. They started over.
"It's all right that she's falling," remarked Zhuk, "These guys are fighters! Try to remember them in a few years they will become World Champions."
"You've got to be kidding..."
"World Champions in the senior level!" repeated Stanislav Alekseevich.
You don't joke around the practice rink. I remembered this conversation several years later, in March of 1986, when happy Sergei and Katia stepped on the top of the podium in Geneva. At that moment, it seemed as though they had always been there " winning youth ensures trust and admiration. Katia was only 14 years old, Sergei 18.
They reminded me of Irina Rodnina and Alexander Zaitsev. Perhaps because of the speed at which they burst into the world of figure skating elite. The fans, feeling a little sad and nostalgic for their past favorites, immediately accepted the young pair and entrusted it with their love and support, which Sergei and Katia definitely deserve.
They come out of the tunnel, walk down the rubber path, take their skate guards off and in a few seconds they are standing on the matte ice surface, in the spotlight.
They take their pose in the middle of the ice. The music will start in a moment. The music will start...
